A SAM-608 conducts light bulb replacement work on a VALS (Visual Approach Lighting Station) in high Earth orbit. The International Space Transportation Consortium (ISTC) requires that all large capacity orbital stations in the Earth system have an array of VAL stations to serve as a navigation redundancy aid in the event that a ship loses all instrumentation and visual piloting is needed. This VALS in particular has over 40,000 individual bulbs that require replacement every 20 years. The front panels of the bulb housings are designed to be easily removeable so an SAM-608 can transport them to facilities where technicians are able to conduct a more thorough inspection.
